Joshua Zirkzee's Potential Manchester United Exit and West Ham Interest

Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly keen to depart from Old Trafford, with West Ham United emerging as a potential suitor for a January transfer. After his £37 million transfer from Bologna, Zirkzee has found it challenging to adapt to the rigors of Premier League football. His tenure at United has seen him net seven goals and provide three assists across 49 competitive matches.

A significant hurdle for Zirkzee has been his ambiguous role within the squad. Under manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, the Dutch international appears to lack a clear position. Despite initial hopes that he could excel as a 'wide 10', Zirkzee has made only four appearances this season and is yet to secure a starting spot. Amorim seemingly favors other attacking options, including new signings Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, along with Mason Mount, who has also been preferred in recent matches.

Given his consistent inclusion in matchday squads, Amorim might be hesitant to lose Zirkzee, despite the player's evident frustration. Zirkzee's desire for more playing time is understandable, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon. For him to be considered for Ronald Koeman's Netherlands squad, consistent match action is crucial.

Speculation about Zirkzee's return to Italy has been circulating since his arrival at Manchester United, and this option remains viable. West Ham, under new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, is reportedly looking to bolster its squad with at least three new signings in January, including a striker, and Zirkzee is identified as a potential target. Serie A clubs, including AS Roma, have also expressed interest in the former Bologna forward, who is reportedly 'desperate to leave Old Trafford'.

For Zirkzee, a move back to Italy's Serie A could be the ideal solution. He previously demonstrated his capabilities in the league, and the playing style there might be better suited to his game. To enhance his chances of making the Netherlands' World Cup squad, securing a transfer to a club where he can play regularly in January is paramount, as his current performances suggest he has not yet fully adapted to the pace and demands of the Premier League.
